Metzler Corporate Finance has advised the owners of the Norderland-Group on the sale of their 360 MW onshore wind farm portfolio to enercity Erneuerbare GmbH, a subsidiary of Hannover-based enercity AG. The sale of the portfolio is one of the largest transactions in the onshore wind farm sector in Germany.

The portfolio includes approximately 60 operating wind farm companies with over 160 wind turbines in the windiest regions of Germany. With a total capacity of over 365 MW and a produced electricity volume of 760 GWh p.a., almost 250,000 households can be supplied. Compared to conventionally generated electricity, the portfolio enables CO2 savings of over 900,000 tons per year. Also part of the transaction was an attractive repowering pipeline and associated infrastructure. The wind farms are mainly located in Lower Saxony as well as in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. The sale was part of an international auction process that attracted strong interest from strategic investors as well as financial investors. Metzler Corporate Finance managed the process exclusively for the sellers until the successful closing.

The Norderland-Group is one of the pioneers of wind energy in Germany and has built up its portfolio over the past 25 years. Back in the 1990s, the owners of the Norderland-Group built what was then Europe's largest wind farm in Holtriem. The portfolio is considered as a landmark project of Germany’s energy transition.

enercity Erneuerbare GmbH is a leading player in the German onshore wind market. With sales of EUR 5 billion (2021) and around 3,000 employees, the parent company enercity AG is one of Germany's largest municipal utilities and a pioneer of the energy transition with forward-looking concepts.

In enercity AG, the owners of the Norderland-Group have found a partner who guarantees that the portfolio will be further developed and expanded in terms of CO2-free power generation, while at the same time ensuring regional value creation.
