Metzler Bank sets the course for the future

  • Gerhard Wiesheu appointed as Spokesman of the Executive Board effective from July 1, 2023
  • Franz von Metzler and Stefanie Buchmann appointed as Members of the Executive Board
  • Wolfgang Kirsch succeeds Dr. Christoph Schücking as Chairman of the Supervisory Board

Metzler Bank is setting the course for the future. Gerhard Wiesheu, Member of the Executive Board of B. Metzler seel. Sohn & Co. AG and currently responsible for Metzler’s Asset Management division, has been appointed Spokesman of the Executive Board effective from July 1, 2023. Emmerich Müller, who currently heads the bank as primus inter pares and turns 67 next year, will step down from the Executive Board on June 30, 2023. Emmerich Müller will continue to be associated with the bank, and a move to the Supervisory Board is planned.

The Supervisory Board has also decided to expand the bank's Executive Board by appointing Franz von Metzler and Chief Representative Stefanie Buchmann with effect from January 1, 2023. The appointment of Franz von Metzler means that a family member will once again be joining the bank's management body.

In addition, Wolfgang Kirsch, currently Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board, will replace Dr. Christoph Schücking as Chairman of the Supervisory Board effective from January 1, 2023. Dr. Schücking, who has been associated with the bank and the Metzler family for decades, will be his deputy.

These changes to the Executive Board will also be associated with new responsibilities. Gerhard Wiesheu will take on responsibility for the Private Banking division alongside Emmerich Müller until his departure at the end of June; effective from July 1, 2023, Mr. Wiesheu will manage this division alone. Franz von Metzler will be the board member responsible for the Asset Management division, while Stefanie Buchmann will be responsible for Compliance, Legal Affairs and Human Resources, among other things. The responsibilities of the other board members will remain essentially unchanged.

Effective from January 1, 2023, the Executive Board at Metzler Bank will be composed of:

  • Emmerich Müller
  • Stefanie Buchmann
  • Kim Comperl
  • Mario Mattera
  • Franz von Metzler
  • Dr. Marco Schulmerich
  • Gerhard Wiesheu (Spokesman from July 1, 2023)

"We are delighted that Gerhard Wiesheu, a long-standing member of the Executive Board, has agreed to take over the helm of the company. Gerhard Wiesheu has extensive knowledge of the financial and banking sector and excellent networks in business and politics. He is taking over an impeccably managed bank that has performed outstandingly under the leadership of Emmerich Müller. The close collaboration between Gerhard Wiesheu and Emmerich Müller will ensure a smooth transition," says Supervisory Board Chairman Dr. Christoph Schücking.

"I am thoroughly confident that Gerhard Wiesheu, with his many years of experience and affiliation with the bank, will steer the bank safely and reliably into the future. Gerhard Wiesheu has the full confidence of the Executive Board, the employees and the von Metzler family. He is the right person to guide the bank safely through a difficult economic environment," says Emmerich Müller.

Gerhard Wiesheu joined Metzler in 2001. He is currently responsible for the Asset Management division and heads Metzler’s North American real estate business. He is also a Member of the Supervisory Board of Nomura Asset Management Europe KVG mbH and DWS Investment GmbH. Since 2020, he has been President of Frankfurt am Main Finance, an initiative of the leading financial center in Germany and the euro zone.

Franz von Metzler joined Metzler in 2014. In 2020, he became Managing Director of Metzler Asset Management GmbH (MAM) and took on responsibility for the Institutional Client Services department. In 2019, Franz von Metzler became Head of the Asset Allocation & Fixed Income team at MAM. Prior to that, he spent two years in the Capital Markets division and in MAM Portfolio Management. Prior to joining Metzler, he worked for almost three years as an M&A analyst at HSBC Holdings plc in London.

Stefanie Buchmann joined Metzler in 2004 and became Chief Representative of the bank in January of 2022. Stefanie Buchmann was Head of the Compliance department from September 2010 to July 2022. From 2004 to August 2010, she headed the Legal department of Metzler Investment GmbH. Prior to joining Metzler, Ms. Buchmann worked in the private wealth management department in the private equity division of Deutsche Bank AG in Frankfurt/Main, Germany.
