For Metzler, Frankfurt/Main is more than just a location. For generations, Metzler Bank and the Metzler family have been committed to supporting institutions that shape the life of the city – ranging from the Städel Museum to the Bürgerhospital to the Senckenberg Society for Natural History. In 2005, the Albert and Barbara von Metzler Foundation was established as a German civil law foundation in order to continue this commitment. Metzler also supports the German Founders’ Award and Nippon Connection, the world's largest festival for Japanese films.
We aim to bridge the gap between research and practice. We finance guest professorships at Goethe University in Frankfurt. We also collaborate with renowned research institutes, including the Fraunhofer Society and the Technical University of Darmstadt. Through our event series “Metzler meets Science”, our business partners and clients receive first-hand information on the current state of research on key economic, industry and social themes.
For the Metzler Foundation, “doing good“ means providing financial support and getting involved. The Foundation operates both directly and through grants. It supports projects that empower people - through education, participation, and improved living conditions. It focuses on educational and child-care projects as well as social assistance. In addition, the statutes of the Foundation provide that Metzler shall promote science and research, art and culture, healthcare, nature conservation, animal welfare, and development aid.
Our foundation motto "doing good" works at two levels. On the one hand, we provide financial support, and on the other hand, we get personally involved in the Foundation's projects to provide assistance and advice.
The statutes of the Metzler Foundation stipulate that the Metzler family must always be represented on the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees. In addition, employees of the bank can personally champion projects and contribute their expertise and professional networks. This allows us to provide personal support, and it helps grantees find suitable partners, expert advice, or new supporters.
The Foundation’s full name is "The Albert and Barbara von Metzler Foundation" in memory of Albert von Metzler and his daughter Barbara. It was established by Friedrich von Metzler based on a philosophy that continues to shape Metzler to this day: responsibility doesn’t end at the capital markets.

Why does a Frankfurt-based bank sponsor a Japanese film festival? Because Nippon Connection brings two things together that are important to Metzler: a long-standing relationship with Japan and a commitment to culture in Frankfurt.
Metzler has been supporting Nippon Connection since 2006. The festival was founded in 2000 as a student initiative at Goethe University in Frankfurt and is now the world’s largest festival for Japanese films. Every May, Nippon Connection screens more than 100 short and feature films over the course of six festival days. The program also includes lectures, workshops, performances, concerts, and exhibitions.
